UTIdefaults

UTIdefaults lets you choose which application should be used by default to open or edit a specific UTI (Uniform Type Identifier)—the content type associated with files such as .txt, .mp4, .jpg and many others.

UTIdefaults is a modern app built entirely with SwiftUI and refined in every detail to deliver a smooth, intuitive user experience that feels perfectly at home on macOS. Its modern multithreading architecture keeps the app fast and responsive.

UTIdefaults fills an important gap in the Mac software landscape. The long-standing RCDefaultApp was discontinued years ago, while the newer and well-regarded SwiftDefaultApps has not been updated recently and does not appear to offer full native support for Apple Silicon.

UTIdefaults was created as a modern, actively maintained, and fully native alternative, designed for today’s Macs and future generations of macOS.

Distributed as a Universal Binary, UTIdefaults offers broad compatibility with both Apple Silicon and Intel-based Macs. It requires macOS 14.6 or later.
